Health Insurance

In light of the cost of health care, all non-Belgian students wishing to participate in an Erasmus exchange programme are required to take out health care insurance.

European students should obtain the European Health Insurance Card (blue card). This card proves that its holder possesses up-to-date medical insurance (via their private mutuelle or health insurance provider) and enables them, in particular, to benefit from reduced health care costs.

Non-European students must fulfil certain obligations and have taken out private health insurance through their private mutuelle or health insurance provider. This insurance must cover health care and treatment (medical consultations and the purchase of medication), dental costs, hospitalisation costs (following an emergency or accident), and repatriation costs.

There are bilateral agreements in place between Belgium and certain European countries in this area: it is the responsibility of the student to look into this since medical insurance is mandatory.

We also strongly advise students to take out insurance to cover, for example, the loss of travel luggage, a return home in case of emergency, and civil liability.

Please note that students arriving in Brussels without health insurance will be required to take out insurance following arrival. Further information can be obtained from the International Relations Unit at Saint-Louis.
