A ‘practical' introduction to digital tools:
This Learning Activity includes an introduction to the basic theory and concepts of information technology and the terminology used in the field. After a presentation by the course tutor of a range of software, students perform a series of individual PC-based exercises related to translation activities.

MHCG1281B - Language Technology :
This teaching activity aims to introduce the basic concepts and terminology related to language technologies. The theoretical explanations will be illustrated by concrete examples. In the practical part, exercises will be demonstrated on several software and platforms so that students can practice them independently.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
MHCG1281A - Digital tools :
First term, lectures and practical sessions (30 hours).

MHCG1281B - Language Technology :
Second term, lectures and practical sessions (30 hours)

We may have to switch to remote teaching methods, depending on how the COVID-19 situation evolves.

Assessment methods and criteria :
This module is subdivided into two parts (part Digital Tools and part Language Technology) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described below. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.

MHCG1281A - Digital Tools: (40% of the final mark given to the course unit)
Written examination with open questions and PC-based exercices. Students who do not have their own login and password will not be allowed to take the exam.

MHCG1281B - Language Technology: (60% of the final mark given to the course unit)
Written test with theoretical questions and practical exercises.
Exercise file to be handed in (date to be confirmed).

Students resitting the exam for this course in 2022-23 will be assessed on the course material of the current year, i.e. 2022-23.

The written tests, normally in face-to-face sessions, can be adapted into remote written tests, depending on how the COVID-19 situation evolves.
