French. An acquaintance with classical languages and to the main modern languages used in scholarly works is an asset.



Learning outcomes :
The seminar introduces bachelor students with the methodology of academic research and writing. A different topic is chosen every year that allows the students to undertake an assisted research in Classical Antiquity.

Course contents :
The chosen topic for this academic year is the use and administration of sacred space in Ancient Greece. The research topic for 2021-2022 was the meaning and expression of military victory in Classical Antiquity. The research topic for 2020-2021 was ancient colonization.
Classroom exercices and assignments provide students with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with each step of the preparation of a research paper; i.e. the heuristic research; the construction of a list of published works; the use of databases, dictionaries and lexicons, corpuses and catalogues; the relevant selection and critical assessment of ancient sources; scientific argumentation.



Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Seminar including theory course by the professor, classroom discussions on the research topic, collective readings and exercices, and lectures by external scholars.



Assessment methods and criteria :
- Active participation in the classroom discussions and exercises throughout the year (20% of the final mark).
- The oral presentation of research results (10% of the final mark)
- A research paper of 20-30 pages (60% of the final mark).
- Errors in spelling and syntax may lead to a penalty (up to 5 points off the final mark).




Recommended or required reading :
A general list of published works relevant to the chosen topic will be made available to the students, and should be completed by the students as part of their individual research.
