Learning outcomes :
The objectives of the course of German linguistics are:
(1) to have students acquire a solid and thorough knowledge of German derivational morphology (processes of formation of new words);
(2) to propose a more in-depth view of German structures (especially in the field of the formation of words);
(3) to have students acquire a thorough knowledge of German phraseology (collocations, idioms, light verb constructions, etc.);
(4) to develop the metalanguage necessary to describe the morphological and phraseological phenomena of German.
In terms of skills, this means that the student will have reached level B2 at the end of the second year.

For the Bachelor in Modern Languages and Letters: German, Dutch and English :

Course contents :
(1) Enhanced knowledge of the field of derivational morphology
(2) In order to achieve a better understanding of the language structure levels in German, the course covers various facets of the formation of new words, thereby focusing on the innovative character of the German language.
(3) Introduction to the field of phraseology. The course introduces students to phraseology (collocations, light verb constructions, etc.).




Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Face-to-face, second term, 30 hours of theory. The exercises require an active participation of the students and a preparation of the topics at home.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Formative:
Assessment is based on formative evaluation, i.e. on the active participation and discussion of issues during the course.

Certificate-based assessment:
At the end of the term, there is a written and oral examination covering the subject material covered during the course. In addition, students must submit a written assignment related to derivational morphology. This work is worth 15% of the final mark.
Weighting: The theoretical course is worth 60% of the final mark, the exercises 40%.

In the event of a change in the pandemic risk and a return to partial or total confinement, the evaluation of this course unit may take the form of an oral exam on Teams.

The teacher provides the PowerPoint slides of the course to the students. Moreover, she illustrates the theses and describes the linguistic models with excerpts of works specialized in linguistics.
