Language of instruction :
German : The course is mainly taught in German. During the first term, translation of difficult terms and texts into French will be made regularly in order to help beginning students. A 30 hour tutoring in German and French given by the assistant will enable the students to understand the texts which we approach in German.



Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, students should be able to

- define a concept of « History of Literature » and question the methodical bases of a German History of Literature ;
- identify and describe the major literary movements of a specific period in the German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland);
- contextualise and discuss in depth literary texts and the major authors belonging to that specific period;
- to produce a structured, well-argued discourse that integrates the specific vocabulary and concepts used in literary studies;
- to analyse a literary text using the knowledge acquired through the course

Course contents :
This course combines an initiation to the critical reading and literary analysis of texts with a historical overview of literature.
The first, analytic part of this course offers an initiation to the basic terms and methods of literary analysis through an analysis of Fairy Tales (first term) and Short Stories (Kurzgeschichten) (second term) after 1945.
The second, historical part of this course gives an overview of German-speaking literature from 1800 until 1900.

The course ‘History of German Literature' has three parts, one part for each bachelor year. In 2022-2023, first year students will learn about the period between 1800 and 1900.





Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lectures and presentations encouraging an active participation of students, favored by weekly preparatory readings.
If the sanitary conditions in the context of COVID19 change to a code orange or red, the courses will be given by Teams.

Different media and technologies regularly come in support (extracts from cinematographic adaptations or theatrical performances, etc.).
The student must present a short story in German (Kurzgeschichte) in front of the group at the end of the year.





Assessment methods and criteria :
Content of the first term
Written exam for the analytic part (50%) and oral exam for the historical part (50%).
Content of the second term
Written exam and oral presentation for the analytic part (50%) and oral exam for historical part (50%) with preparation time.

The assistant will prepare an exam of his own that will contribute to 30% of the global mark.

Final mark: first term (50%) + second term (50%)

This course includes 30 hours of tutoring with workshops. These sessions are meant to help students become familiar with the texts and basic terms and methods thanks to activities in which the texts discussed in class are approached from a different angle, but also writing tasks and short presentations similar to the exam questions. Translation into French will be used as a tool to help students understand difficult texts in German.
