Learning outcomes :
The course aims to:
- initiate the students to the experimental method;
- initiate the students to the fundamental concepts and methodology of classical physics;
- initiate the students to the modelling and conceptualisation approach of the physical world by using mathematical tools;
- make the students able to solve simple physical problems.

By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- check through experimentation the validity of laws of classical physics;
- understand and explain the fundamental concepts;
- model simple physical situations using concise and accurate mathematical language;
- solve simple physical problems.

Course contents :
Electricity and magnetism
- Electrostatics (charge, electric field and electric potential)
- Polarisation of the matter, condensers and dielectrics
- Electric current, resistance and conductors
- Electric circuit R and RC
- Magnetostatics: effects of the magnetic field on the matter
- Magnetic field generation and magnetisation of the matter
- Electromagnetic induction
- Induction, inductive circuits, electromagnetic fluctuations.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The tree parts of the course are complementary and in continuous interaction. The theoretical course aims to explain the fundamental concepts and the laws of classical physics. This approach is illustrated and applied to concrete everyday life situations and examples.
The exercise sessions enable to check the understanding, assimilation and appropriate use of the theoretical concepts. In addition, they initiate to a creative and synthetic approach.
The laboratory sessions aim to initiate the students to the experimental approach. The students will have to compare experimental results with the predictions of the theoretical models. This approach will teach them to be discerning while facing different models, to test the validity of their simplifying hypotheses and to comprehend the accuracy limitations of the measures.


Assessment methods and criteria :
- Summative assessment:
Written examination lasting 4 hours including theoretical questions (1/2) and exercises to solve (1/2).
- Formative assessment:
The exercises proposed as homework will be corrected in class.
The laboratory reports will be corrected and commented.
