DRHO2110 - Rights Related to Individual Autonomy

Learning outcomes :
The students shall be equipped to understand the principles of international human rights law and the jurisprudence of the human rights monitoring bodies.

Course contents :
The course is divided in two parts: a general part (4 courses), taught by O. De Schutter, and a special part devoted to the analysis of the principal rights related to individual autonomy (8 courses), taught by J.-Y. Carlier and S. Saroléa. The general part of the course covers the fundamental principles, including the role of international human rights law in general public international law and the general principles of human rights law. The special part of the course includes 8 chapters and deals with the main substantive guarantees provided in international human rights law.



Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lectures, based on the analysis of case law, and with a strong interaction with the students.


Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination (3 hours long, closed-book examination; the students may however consult the Code de droit international des droits humains (De Schutter et al., 5ème édition mise à jour, Larcier, 2019), or an equivalent resource, without annotations). The students shall have three essay questions, covering both the general part of the course (1 question) and the special part (2 questions).

Recommended or required reading :
The students shall be provided an updated bibliography at the start of the Term. They are also strongly recommended to use the Code de droit international des droits humains (De Schutter et al., 5ème édition mise à jour, Larcier, 2019).
