ROMA1220 - Explanation of French authors of the Middle Ages I

Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, the students should be able to translate literally the studied excerpts and to give a more literary translation in correct modern French. They should be able to refer to the reference works as well as use efficiently the dictionaries and grammars of old French. They should have read in translation (juxtalinear if possible), at least the works in old French that have been studied in class.

Course contents :
The course starts with an introduction, which provides the students with the linguistic rudiments (written forms, declinations, conjugations...) necessary to approach texts in a language condition that is substantially different from modern French (old and middle French), as well as notions of medieval French versification.

The next step is to study text excerpts of major works of medieval literature, the works vary from year to year: la Chanson de Roland, le cycle de Guillaume d'Orange, le Roman d'Eneas, les romans de Chrétien de Troyes, Tristan et Iseut, les lais de Marie de France, le Roman de Renart, Aucassin et Nicolette, le Jeu de la Feuillée, les poèmes de Rutebeuf, songs, tales, mysteries, farces, chronicles... Each studied work will be situated in its literary and historical context (see the "History of French literature” course).

The text will be analysed and commented according to the general meaning of the work.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The students are encouraged to prepare the texts with the help of old French dictionaries and grammars. In class, they have to work on the translation of the texts. The presentation is an ex cathedra lecture. The analysis and commentaries are made by bringing the students to reflect on the texts.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Formative assessment: the students have to prepare the translations of the texts before the sessions, translate themselves in class, with immediate correction.
Final assessment: oral examination.

A detailed bibliography is distributed and discussed at the first session.
