On completing this Unit students should be able to: 1. Recognise these basic Italian grammatical mechanisms in any form of text/speech; 2.Apply these mechanisms both in the spoken and the written language as well as in exercises similar to those undertaken in class.

Course contents :
Module 1: morphology of articles, nouns and adjectives; the verb: present indicative (including reflexive verbs), perfect and future tenses. Introduction to Italian phonetics. Module 2: pronouns; comparatives and superlatives; the verb: the imperfect (indicative), conditional, present and imperfect subjunctives; introduction to compound sentences. Lectures and in-class exercises.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written and oral continuous assessment represents 25 % of the final mark for each Module, which conclude with a written exam. Module 1 has a value of 2 credits; Module 2 has a value of 3 credits.
