MHCG1211 - New Technologies and Scientific Language

Learning outcomes :
On completion of this Course Unit students should be able to:
• Understand and exploit the concepts used in the fields of science and technology studied, as well as use their specific terminologies;
• Type text with a certain ease and speed;
• Use the Microsoft Office suite for their translation activities;
• Use Windows to archive documents ;
• Carry out simple documentary research ;
• Create and manage PDF files;
• Use the standard functionalities of the MemoQ CAT tool .

Course contents :
This course introduces students (body of knowledge and/or know-how) to a selection of today's major fields of science and/or technology.

In practical terms, it is structured around two Learning Activities:

1° A ‘practical' introduction to new technologies:
This Learning Activity includes an introduction to the basic theory and concepts of information technology and the terminology used in the field. After a presentation by the course tutor of a range of software, students perform a series of individual PC-based exercises related to translation activities.

2° A theoretical introduction to the language of science:
This Learning Activity includes an introduction to the fields of biotechnology and telecommunication.

Face-to-face , first term, 30 hours of theory


Assessment methods and criteria :
This module is subdivided into two parts (part New Technologies and part Scientific Language) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described below. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second or third exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.

New Technologies : (50% of the final mark given to the course unit)
Written examination with open questions and PC-based exercices
The students who do not have their login and password will not be allowed to take this exam.

Scientific Language: (50% of the final mark given to the course unit)
Written examination: open questions and MCQs
