Learning outcomes :
On completing the course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate a broad general culture and to extend it;
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of German culture, in particular in its historical, geographical, political, economic, social and artistic aspects;
- Develop documentary search strategies in selecting and effectively using tools;
- Understand, memorize and communicate information effectively;
- produce varied simple and more complex sentences in German; - With or without translation tools, translateinto German and within the agreed timeframe a new text on a subject studied during the course using correct grammar, lexical selection, syntax, phraseology and punctuation; - Use the basic functions of the translation tool used during the course.

Course contents :
During the "Culture" part of the course, students develop and acquire the following LOs:

On completing this Unit students should be able to:

• use selected existing resources to identify and extract first the useful and relevant information and second, the (new) linguistic information necessary to ful;
•structure the text with a limited range of connectors, nevertheless sufficient to produce a clear and coherent text;
• Identify reliable and suitable sources for the documentation needed to (1) understand the source text and (2) that can be exploited for language purposes in order to produce a translation (target text); * efficiently use verbal and non-verbal communication strategies necessary to complete the given communicative task(s)
• Resolve translation problems by applying the theory taught during the course;

• Provide, if necessary, explanatory notes with their translation work;
• Save their work and supply it in the form requested to the client by the agreed deadline.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lectures and documentaries will form the backbone of the course. Students will also have to make a least one oral presentation in front of the group. To prepare for some lessons, students will be given articles or other texts to read at home. This, as well as active participation during the course are highly encouraged. Should it prove necessary, elocution, pronunciation and imporvisation lessons will be organised to improve fluency and pronunciation in German. In addition to oral presentation skills, general competencies like speaking in public, use of fillers or other communication strategies will be developed. The aim is to be able to use presentation tools, be able to structure discourse and prepare for the oral exam. If possible, individual feedback will be given after each presentation made during the course. In the "translation" part of the course, attention will be paid to method and correct writing in the foreign language. Method and quality matter more than quantity of translated text.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The "culture" part represents 75% of the global mark. The assessment will consist of an oral presentation (with presentation tool) and of a question on the course content. Assessment criteria are relevance of the content, variety of sources, correct mentioning of the sources, correct use of specific vocabulary, grammar, rythm and pronunciation and the global communiative performance. The exam related to the "translation" part will consist of a translation of a text on a topic dealt with in class. Assesssment criteria are correct content and correct use of the foreign language, application of specific points taught during classes.. This module/course is subdivided into two parts ("culture" part and "translation into German" part) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described above. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second or third exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.
