Learning outcomes :
With reference to the Learning Outcomes of the Degree in Translation and Interpretation, students following this Unit develop and acquire the following skills (LOs) :

On completing this Unit students should :

Be able to use - both orally and in writing - the vocabulary related to the themes studied, with a high degree of lexical precision and diversity (e.g. spelling, gender & plural forms of nouns, word formation, thematic fields);
Have attained the B1 level of the European reference framework for languages in oral expression/interaction in a specific set of linguistic scenarios such as introductions in a professional context, talking about one's education, one's choice of career, one's ICT skills, etc. The student is able to use a limited number of logical connectors and conjunctions and can take an active part is a discussion.

Course contents :
Each week students are required to study and use the vocabulary of a different given theme.
In particular the Course provides an opportunity to use the vocabulary studied in context (in written and oral formats and in listening and reading activities).
In addition to oral language practice (role play, debates, presentations), the Course covers more formal aspects with the aim of providing students with the tools they need to structure their speech (logical connectors, conjunctions), for entering/initiating a conversation and turn management (expressions and structures) as well as for pronunciation and speech rhythm (tongue twisters with a focus on the particularities of German -h-ch/sch-ich/ach, etc.; speed reading and memory games, etc).

Individual preparations to the course online. Face-to-face teaching. Active participation highly recommended and will be included in the final mark (20% of the final mark).


Assessment methods and criteria :
Continuous assessment based on participation in lessons
By written assessment comprising a variety of question types (lexicology : 50%)
Oral assessment (role play situation; oral expression: 50%). This module/course is subdivided into two parts (part "lexicology" and part "oral expression) and has two separate exams. This course is subdivided into two parts (oral practice and lexicology) and has two separate exams.
The global mark is an average calculated as described. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second or third exam session. It is thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course.
