Learning outcomes :
The aim is to initiate the students to the daily techniques of the historians' work, by giving them also the possibility to use their historical criticism and encyclopaedia of history knowledge. The different aspects of scientific research in history (questionnaire, bibliographic research, critical treatment of works and of an original source, writing and argumentation) are thus taken into account. The end of year work is the opportunity for students to demonstrate their acquisition and integration of knowledge and know-how: it is their first “masterpiece” in preparation of the seminar works and the master's thesis.

None

Co-requisites :
None

Course contents :
As this course is designed to study different periods, it aims to provide the students with the fundamental knowledge that a general historian should have. The following steps of the historian's method will be presented in a practical way and subjected to exercises: criticism of original sources (what can we learn from them?) and historians' works (how to conduct a research and present its results?); identifications (persons, places, institutions) and research of fundamental information; writing a bibliography and critical reports; bibliographic investigation. The redaction of a final individual essay enables the implementation of all the techniques and methods acquired by the student.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Presentation of the exercises, contextualisation and demonstrations; the exercises made by the students will be corrected in class. Assistance is provided for the students to get started on their end of year essay.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Continuous assessment: essays and exercises during the year : 25 %
Summative assessment: written work at the end of the year. There is no final examination : 75 %

Recommended or required reading :
This course relies on the general bibliography of the Encyclopaedia of history course. More specific elements will be mentioned for the realisation of the essays.
