Learning outcomes :
As this course is designed to traverse different periods of time, it aims to provide the students with the basis for training as a general historian, through a methodical and rational approach of research of information (works of historians and historical documents). Several courses in second year will enable the students to go deeper into this subject matter.

Course contents :
After the presentation of the fundamental principles (meaning of the heuristic approach, bibliographical reference system, functioning of a library), the course will successively present the specialised encyclopaedias and dictionaries, the different types of bibliography, syntheses and reviews, and provides a first overview of the publication of sources. The focus will be on the instruments' typology, their relevance and on the method. Electronic resources will be compared to paper-publications. The studied field extends from Prehistory to the present time.


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lectures completed by regular library exercises that will allow students to manipulate the works presented and commented in class.


Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination followed by a practical examination in the library.

Recommended or required reading :
The syllabus consisting of a bibliography of around 390 pages; the references of the works available in the library are also indicated.
