HDPO1321 - Law, Governance and Sustainable development

Learning outcomes :
The students will be able to critically assess how the integrative dimension of the ‘sustainable development' paradigm made its way into public policy tools and their legal determinants.
This course aims to provide the students with:
- an understanding of the role and of the rule of law in the protection of ‘qualitative values', such as environmental protection;
- an ability to understand the responsibility and capacity of a wide array of actors in that transition;
- the necessary background to discuss the relevance of a large range of current policy instruments, based on case studies.

Course contents :
- Nature's rights
- Sustainable development and equity. A critical assessment
- Essentials of environmental law (Prevention, access to information, participation, link to science)
- Climate change - The Paris Agreement
- Consumption and production patterns
- Law, Gouvernance and protections of the ‘commons'.



Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lecture. The course is participative: students are required to prepare the session (reading materials) and to work on case studies. The objective is to hold informed discussions and to co-create parts of the knowledge.




Assessment methods and criteria :
Written exam. Dissertation. Ability to draw links and to react to an unseen question.
