Dutch: Linguistics II
The course Dutch: Linguistics II (part 2) aims to provide in-depth coverage of the morphological characteristics of Dutch. This course deepens the understanding of the basic concepts of morphology by applying them to Dutch. Emphasis is placed on both empirical observations and aspects of theoretical analysis.
Dutch: Practical exercises II
To improve students' knowledge of Dutch and their general language skills (we work on all four skills: oral and written expression & reading and listening comprehension) through the study of a specific theme. The level is equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level C1.

In addition, in the second semester, some course hours (of both learning activities) will be devoted to the methodology of scientific research in the field of Dutch linguistics.

Dutch: Linguistics II
Dutch: Linguistics II consists of two modules: phonology and morphology.
In addition to an introduction to the guiding principles of morphology, the second module of the course (second term) covers the following points: morphological complexity, productivity, inflection, derivation and composition.
These various topics are abundantly illustrated, and the presentation of the theoretical concepts and the empirical observations is supplemented by regular practical exercises.

Dutch: Practical exercises II
Each class includes practice of the 4 skills and is based on the study of one of the following themes:
• communication and the use of new forms of media,
• culture (with a particular focus on the cultural differences between Flanders and the Netherlands),
• linguistics (language variation and change)
In addition, students will be asked to perform an assignment in the context of Methodology of Scientific Research in Dutch Linguistics. This assignment is assessed for both learning activities (Dutch: Linguistics II and Dutch: Practical Exercises II).

The teaching unit Dutch: linguistics II and practical exercises consists of two learning activities: (1) the course Linguistics II and (2) practical exercises. The weighting between the linguistics course and the practical exercises is 60/40.
Dutch: Linguistics II
Lectures (interactive, implying active participation of the students), accompanied by numerous exercises (also more advanced exercises, in which the students learn how to identify and analyse new linguistic facts).
Dutch: Practical Exercises II
The course adopts a seminar format with interactive exercises that require students' active participation.
Students are also often asked to prepare exercises before coming to class, in order to allow for better progress of the course.

The weighting between the linguistics course and the practical exercises is 60/40.
For both learning activities, the weighting between January and June is 50/50.

The participation in the course “practical exercises” will be taken into consideration in the calculation of the overall course grade in compliance with article 4 of the specific exam provisions (cf.

Dutch: Linguistics II
Formative assessment:
The various exercises done in the course of the year should give the students an accurate idea of the comprehension and the assimilation of the course.

Summative assessment during the exam session:
Oral exam in June.
The exam comprises three types of questions (all three of both theoretical and empirical nature): 1) reproduction questions, 2) comprehension questions, 3) questions focused on applying the knowledge acquired during the course.
Dutch: Practical exercises II

Summative assessment during the exam session: written and oral examination in June.

Assignment - Methodology of Scientific Research in Dutch Linguistics (for both learning activities)
The grading for this assignment is as follows:
- for Dutch: Linguistics II 20/60
- for Dutch: Practical Exercises 15/40
