DROI11522 - Everyday Dutch (advanced level)

Credits : 5

Lecturer :
Mode of delivery :
Face-to-face , first and second term, 60 hours of theory.

Language of instruction :
Dutch.

Learning outcomes :
By the end of the course, the students should:
• have improved and activated their actual everyday language abilities;
• have familiarised themselves with the press, society and culture of the Dutch speaking world;
• have read many current texts, made presentations of prepared work, lead debates and thus practiced different language registers and used the four linguistic competences.

Prerequisites :
None

Co-requisites :
None

Course contents :
At the beginning of the year, the students choose one or more presentation subjects. After the actual presentation, the students will answer the questions of the class and propose other themes, questions and documents, which could start a debate. During the presentation, the professor will restrict himself to necessary punctual observations and will only make his comments or remarks after the presentation, in order to safeguard the realism of the exercise.

Role-playing exercises, dialogues, written commentaries, etc. will enable the students to use all their linguistic competences.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Besides the documents referring to the presentations of the students, a great number of current texts will be suggested orally, in writing or by video/CD-Rom. These will preferably present conflicting arguments (for and against) in order to initiate a debate and familiarise the students with the Dutch-speaking world.

Assessment methods and criteria :
At the end of each term, the students will have to take an examination based on texts (some studied in class, some not). These examinations will enable them to improve, often considerably, the mark they received for the initial test.
