Credits : 5

Mode of delivery :
Face-to-face , first and second term, 60 hours of theory.

Language of instruction :
Dutch.

Learning outcomes :
By the end of the course, the students should have:
• consolidated and broadened their fundamental knowledge of the language;
• developed their receptive skills to be able to successfully follow the “specialised language” course in second year;
• familiarised themselves with the press, society and culture of the Dutch-speaking world.

Prerequisites :
None

Co-requisites :
None

Course contents :
We will focus on receptive exercises (listening comprehension, skimming, written or oral synthesis in French, etc.). Specific translation and reproduction exercises, as well as the study of current texts, will enable the students to extend their lexical and idiomatic knowledge and to occasionally revise the grammatical bases of Dutch. The subject matters are grouped together thematically in order to better structure the acquisition of the lexical and structural aspects. Debates, role plays, dialogues, written commentaries, etc. will give the students the opportunity to put into practice and improve their oral and written expression skills. In these exercises, the fear of making mistakes will give way to the pleasure of communicating and expressing yourself.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The students develop one syllabus for each theme. It includes the studied texts and is completed by an accurate learning instrument wherein the subject matter to be acquired is divided into the following categories: transparent words, idiomatic expressions, grammar, useful vocabulary, word families and specific terminology (thematic). During an academic year we will study a minimum of three themes.
Occasionally, audiovisual documents of general interest will be proposed to the students to illustrate the studied themes and to familiarise them with the Dutch-speaking world and with its phonetic differences between North and South.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The students who did not receive a sufficient mark at the initial test are required to follow this course. The final mark is the addition of three tests (3 X 4 points) during the academic year (continuous assessment) and an oral examination (8 points) at the beginning of the revision period. This oral examination is based on the syllabus which will be available from the beginning of the year at the reprography service, and in which the students will have to choose four texts to prepare individually. This double approach should guarantee real chances of success even if the starting level wasn't sufficient.
