Learning outcomes :
On completing this Unit "Translation and Interpretation", students should be able to demonstrate their ability to: translate an unfamiliar text from the fields of the environment, economics, law or technology into perfect French in line with the norms of vocabulary and phraseology customary in these text genres; understand a message and the arguments that constitute it, contained in an Italian-language oral text; without notes, reformulate an authentic Italian-language message in correct and intelligible spoken French; with notes, produce a structured, logical and coherent oral summary into French of an oral message in Italian; recognise and respect the intentions of the author of the original text; students should have acquired qualities such as concentration & perseverance.

For the Bachelor in translation and interpreting :

Course contents :
Translation exercises into French (real or popularised texts on the themes of the environment, law, economics or technology with readings of reference/parallel texts and terminological research); practical exercises focusing on transferring oral Italian messages (texts) into French.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Translation exercises both in class and at home with individualised tutor correction and comparison with published translations; oral exercises (pair work) both in-class and in the language laboratory with tutor's comments on the rendering and structure of the message as well as on the quality of expression in mother tongue.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Translation : written exam (70%). Interpretation : oral exam (30%).
