Learning outcomes :
The course intends to give the students an analytical overview of (1) the way in which the European integration process has an impact on the institutional structure, policies and political processes in the member states; and (2) the processes that shape the national preferences of member state to participate in EU decision-making.

Course contents :
The course is divided into two parts:
- part 1 encompasses several conceptual and theoretical approaches in the study of europeanisation processes, with a particular emphasis on intra-paradigmatic variabilities and debates. It covers aspects of the europeanisation of the policies, politics and even of the institutional system of the member states;
- part 2 analyses the way Belgium deals with its EU membership and examines how Belgium participates in EU decision-making, with a particular emphasis on the role of its sub-national entities and the interaction between multiple levels of governance. It will also demonstrate to what extent particular findings on the Belgian case can be generalized towards the europeanisation of other EU member states.

- Concepts, mechanisms and methods in the study of europeanisation.

- The europeanisation of the Belgian political system.
