The aim is to initiate the students to the daily techniques of the historians' work, by giving them also the possibility to use their historical criticism and encyclopaedia of history knowledge. The different aspects of scientific research in history (questionnaire, bibliographic research, critical treatment of works and of an original source, writing and argumentation) are thus taken into account. The end of year work is the opportunity for students to demonstrate their acquisition and integration of knowledge and know-how: it is their first “masterpiece” in preparation of the seminar works and the master's thesis.

This class aims at providing the students with the fundamental methodological knowledge of a general historian in a trans-period perspective. The following steps of the historian's method will be presented in a practical way and subjected to exercises: criticism of original sources (what can we learn from them?) and historians' works (how to conduct a research and present its results?); identifications (persons, places, institutions) and research of fundamental information; writing a bibliography and critical reports; bibliographic investigation. The redaction of a final individual essay enables the implementation of all the techniques and methods learned by the student.

During the Fall term, the course will be subdivided into different modules corresponding to the different stages of the scientific research process in history. Each module will first include a theoretical presentation, then will be followed by in-class exercises and then a personal work. This work will be corrected either in group sessions or by individual return (permanences will be organized). During the Spring term, the writing of the final essay will be accompanied by various mandatory group sessions to present the results obtained at each stage of the research process.

Continuous assessment: essays and exercises during the year: 40 %
Summative assessment: written essay at the end of the year.
Final examination: 60 %
Errors in spelling and syntax will be subject to a penalty of up to 3 points of the final mark.

This course relies on the general bibliography of the course HIST1112 Documentary resources. More specific elements will be mentioned for the realisation of the in-year essays.
