Learning outcomes :
By the end of the course, the student should be able to
- conduct a critical reading and analysis of literary texts belonging to the three main genres (poetry, prose and drama) using appropriate concepts and methods
- write an essay on literary texts in accordance with current scientific writing standards;

Course contents :
The student will be trained in the main theoretical and methodological tools necessary for an in-depth analysis of the literary text and its relationship to other arts and media. The texts cover the entire history of Dutch literature and are chosen because of their canonical status and/or because of the innovation they have initiated. Priority is given to different disciplinary approaches and their combinations: narratology; post-classical narratology; psychoanalysis; post-structuralism; imagology; discourse analysis; ideology of the text, language acts, intertextuality, (post)colonial, feminist readings,...


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Based on concrete cases and through exchanges between teacher and students, the course presents the theoretical and methodological tools for the scientific analysis of Dutch-language literary texts. Based on an ex cathedra introduction, students are invited to react critically and creatively to texts from different literary genres.

The course is accompanied by 30 hours of exercises. The exercises focus on the more complex texts that will be discussed in the course. They serve to check comprehension and vocabulary. The exercises also provide the first elements of analysis of the texts which will be studied in greater depth with the teacher.

Several hours of the course are devoted to the methodology of scientific research as practiced in Dutch literature and to accompanying students in the writing of two scientific papers (one paper per term), in particular the validation of the corpus and help with the writing (documentary research, structuring, argumentation, etc.). Visits to the university library and the Muntpunt library are also planned.


Assessment methods and criteria :
First term
1/ Oral exam, 15 to 20 min. on the subject analysed during the course. 60% of the final grade in January.
2/ Oral discussion, based on a document (1500 words max.): argued hypothesis (logical links + bibliography with secondary literature) on ONE aspect of a work chosen personally and not covered in the course. This paper must be submitted NO LATER THAN THE FIRST DAY OF THE BLOCK. The paper counts for 40% of the final grade in January.

Second term
1/ Examination on the subject of (Q1 +) Q2 (60%)
2/ Oral discussion, based on a document (1500 words max.): argued hypothesis (logical links + bibliography with secondary literature) on ONE aspect of a work chosen by the student personally and not covered in the course. The student is encouraged to choose the same essay as during the first term. The student will have reworked, developed and expanded it based on feedback from the January exam and from the teaching assistant. This paper must be submitted NO LATER THAN THE FIRST DAY OF THE BLOCK. The paper counts for 40% of the final grade in January.
