Learning outcomes :
The course aims to reinforce students' general English language skills and guide them in acquiring the basic concepts of UK/US legal terminology through reading comprehension, listening exercises and speaking practice.

By the end of the course, the student should be able to show that:
- S/he has acquired a basic knowledge of the structures, main concepts and basic legal terminology pertaining to UK/US legal systems (Common Law);
- S/he is able to consult legal documentation in the English language, with a particular focus on case-law.
- S/he is able, using easily comprehensible language, to explain and debate legal texts of limited technical depth as well as the structures, concepts and basic terminology pertaining to UK and US legal systems within the framework of the course materials taught at lectures.

Course contents :
The course explores key areas of the common law legal systems (focusing on the UK and US), including :
- The sources of law (e.g. Precedent, equity, statute)
- The court system
- Tort law
- Contract law
- Criminal law
- Constitutional law, including judicial review and human rights

For each topic, students will be introduced to core concepts, terminology and other relevant information, and will analyse legal cases/judgements taken from UK, US and International jurisdictions.

Supplementary reading materials may be made available via Moodle during the trimester.





Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lectures accompanied by task-based practical activities, which require active preparation and student participation in and outside of class. Lectures and/or tutorials may be given online, depending on public health advice linked to the coronavirus pandemic.




Assessment methods and criteria :

The evaluation consists of two parts to be carried out by means of:

• A practical collaborative [oral] assignment to be submitted and presented during the term in which the course is taught.

• A written exam. The exam may take place in person or online, depending on health and safety requirements.

NB: To succeed at the evaluation stage, students will need a sufficient level of English to understand the main ideas of the topic(s) covered, to produce clear and detailed texts, to understand and respond to technical questions and to describe or briefly give reasons for opinions.
