Course contents :
The course aims to develop:
a. Understanding of authentic texts and reports. The chosen contents come from Dutch-speaking media and deal with general topics, as well as with issues related to the social, political and philosophical organisation of society. The student will also be required to read a Dutch-language work of (fiction).

b. Oral and written expression, the student will have to express himself/herself on the topics covered in the course. This will also serve as a basis for lexical extension, grammar review, synthesis and conversation exercises.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
There are two interactive hours of Dutch per week during the first term.
Active participation in form of preparation, oral or written exercises is requested.
The students will also have to read Het Diner by Herman Koch, Uitgever Leeslicht, ISBN 978 90 8696 113 9

If a part of the teaching activities cannot be carried out face-to-face for sanitary reasons, instructions will be sent via Moodle / Teams and the active participation of each student in these activities will be expected. Any modification to the lesson plan (contents, calendar,...) due to external circumstances will be communicated via Moodle.

An exemption test (and not a level test) is organized at the beginning of the first term, the week of 20 September 2021, to allow the strongest students to be exempted from the course.
Please note that an overall mark of 16/20 must be obtained in order to be exempted from the course and that it is not possible to present this test at another time.

Assessment methods and criteria :
There will be a written and an oral exam at the end of the term.

A/ The written off-session exam takes place on Monday 13 December 2021.
The exam will cover the subjects studied in class and the reading the Dutch work.
This part will count for 50% in the final weight.

B/ The oral off-session exam (dates to be defined), will cover all the subjects studied during the term.
This part will count for 50% in the final weight.

In case the student has not obtained the average (for the 2 parts) of 10/20 in June, he/she is obliged to retake in August the part(s) for which he/she has not obtained 10/20.

Students who get 10/20 or higher will keep their result. The students will therefore not be able to re-sit their oral/written exam for which they have obtained a mark of 10/20 or higher.

If the sanitary conditions do not allow for face-to-face examinations, the modes of evaluation will be hybrid. The exams will also be organized off session.
The students would in that case have only an oral exam that would count for 100% and that would be organized via TEAMS. Nevertheless, the students could also have questions about a personal work they would have to prepare and send in advance by e-mail or via Moodle.

Any changes to the assessments, due to external circumstances, will be communicated via Moodle.

Please note that students are required to follow all information and instructions posted on Moodle. Failure to do so will result in failure with a 0 for the part(s) concerned.
