Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, students should be able to

- define a concept of « History of Literature » and question the methodical bases of a German History of Literature ;
- identify and describe the major literary movements of a specific period in the German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland);
- contextualise and discuss in depth literary texts and the major authors belonging to that specific period;
- to produce a structured, well-argued discourse that integrates the specific vocabulary and concepts used in literary studies;
- to analyse a literary text using the knowledge acquired through the course.

Course contents :
This course combines training in critical reading and literary analysis, and a historical approach to literature.

The first part of the course focuses on the terminology and methodology of literary analysis through the in-depth study of several selected major authors from the XXth and XXIst centuries. It is a question of deepening the knowledge of German-speaking literature by treating these important authors and their time in depth. At the end of the course, students should be able to recognize and contextualize the works treated in the course. They should be able to write a scientific work on a given subject (poem, prose text, play) by relying on the appropriate theories. They will be asked to speak German in public, as part of a presentation.

The second part completes the historical training with an overview of German-speaking literature ranging from the Enlightenment to the classicist era of Weimar.

In 2020-2021, students having already followed the sections on literature from the period between 1800 to 1900, they will tackle the literature of the Enlightenment and the classical authors of Weimar (Schiller, Goethe etc.).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
Face-to-face: Lecture and presentations encouraging an active participation of students, favored by weekly preparatory readings. If the sanitary conditions in the context of CoVid19 change to a code orange or red, the courses will be given by Teams.
Different media and technologies regularly come in support (extracts from cinematographic adaptations or theatrical performances, etc.).
The student of block 2 must present a work by an author treated in class in front of the group at the end of the year and submit the written version of this presentation in correct German.
Students in Block 3 who take this course must write an 8-10 page scientific essay.

Assessment methods and criteria :

a) analytical part (50%)

- Written exam on the critical reading and literary analysis component. (70%)
- Presentation on an author and a specific work with delivery of the presentation text in correct German. (30%).

Oral exam on the historical part of the course (50%)

c) The assistant plans a separate exam for his course which will represent one third of the overall mark.

This course includes 30 hours of tutoring in form of workshops. These sessions are meant to help students become familiar with the texts and basic terms and methods thanks to activities in which the texts discussed in class are approached from a different angle, but also writing tasks and short presentations similar to the exam. Translation into French will be used as a tool to help students understand difficult texts in German.

Students must take this course during even academic years (2020-2021, 2022-2023, etc.).
