This course aims to give to the students a thorough knowledge of Middle Eastern and Classical Antiquity, but also to make them aware of the variety of sources allowing to reach this knowledge. Moreover, it will raise their awareness of the diversity of civilizations that lived in the Mediterranean area and it will give them a clearer perception of the complex developments that took place in the ancient world.

The course will recount the history of the Mediterranean area and the Middle East in ancient times. The focus will be put on Greek and Roman civilizations, but we shall also examine the history of other peoples like those of pre-Roman Italy, Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia or Carthage. The course is divided into five parts, following a chronological progression. Inside each part, a transverse approach of civilizations will be favoured, to give a perspective on the interconnections that existed within the ancient Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas. Beyond the institutional and political history, a significant space will be given to the social history, the ancient religions (from the Egyptian polytheism to the triumph of Christianity), the practices of everyday life and the history of arts and literature.

Lecture with illustrations and readings. Punctuated by lectures given by other invited professors, coming from Belgium or abroad. Questions from students are always welcome.

Oral examination with preparation time.
