Additionally, they should be able to accurately translate excerpts dealing with important data, avoiding the pitfalls that can be caused by false friends and structures that are specific to English.

Prerequisites :

Co-requisites :

Course contents :
As this course essentially aims to develop the students' ability to understand difficult texts, the contents will be chosen from English and American press articles and will deal with general subjects on issues relating to the social and legal organisation of society. These texts serve as basis for the vocabulary-building exercises, for grammar review, for the exercises of oral summary and conversation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
In addition to the newspapers, the grammar textbook by J.-L. CUPERS & Ch. LORIAUX, Grammaire fondamentale de l'anglais, De Boeck, serves as the reference for the review and extending of grammatical notions. Vocabulaire anglais (Bordas Langues) by Michèle Dimier Quique will also be used during the course.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The assessment is continuous. The final grade is obtained by adding together the scores achieved on the 3 written tests during the year (each test after approximately 8 hours of classes) and the score of the oral examination. The following is the breakdown of the final grade:

12 points: 3 written tests
8 points: oral examination

Total: 20 points maximum

Each written test includes:

- listening comprehension of a text not covered during the course
- reading comprehension of a text not covered during the course
- translation of excerpts of texts covered during the course
- translation of excerpts of texts not covered during the course

The oral examination will consist of a 15-minute discussion on a topic presented by the student and on an article not covered during the course and designated by the professor.
