Face-to-face , second term, 30 hours of theory.

Language of instruction :

Learning outcomes :
The topic of the course is to discover and analyse written Literature as employed IN and FOR other media apart from the book, such as Radio, Cinema and Computer. The aim is to describe the particularities in terms of form and content of a literary text when it is applied to another medium. Furthermore we will discuss the role of the production and reception of literature, according to the chosen medium.

Prerequisites :
None

Co-requisites :
None

Course contents :
This year, the course is composed of three sections: literature and radio, literature and cinema, literature and computer. In the three parts, we will study some literary texts conceived -rather than adapted - for each medium: particularly, the radio play (or radio drama), the screenplay, the literary hypertext. Each genre will be included in an historical and theoretical context related to the corresponding medium. Then, we will choose some important examples in order to read and analyse the most well-known writers: among others, Thomas, Beckett, Pinter, Tardieu, Gadda, Pinget, Borchert, Dürrenmatt, Sarraute and Bachmann for radio plays; Sartre, Pasolini, Handke, Duras, Robbe-Grillet, and Pinter for screenplays; and some new authors for Hypertext Novels and Poetry, a new literary genre which has been developing in the last 15 years.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course will be given ex cathedra by the professor. It is based on PPT presentations and audio-visual commented documents. However, students are encouraged to take part and to think about personal choices in the bibliography.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation will be based on an oral exam of 15-20 minutes. The exam consists of a theoretical and general part as well as a personal and analytical part.

Recommended or required reading :
For the exam, good knowledge of the course contents will be required (PPT slides will be available on esaintlouis). The students are supposed to study the obligatory works of the bibliography (distributed at the beginning of the course and available afterwards on esaintlouis). This personal part of the exam will be based on a radio play, a screenplay (and possibly the related film) and a hypertext, chosen by the student from the bibliography.
Foreign languages are not required for the main bibliography (novels, films and other supports), which is available in French. Nevertheless, it is possible to read the works in the original language.

Other information :
Please prepare a personal bibliography of the chosen works for the exam, which will be given to the professor.
