Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, students should be capable of identifying - within both their historical framework and their socio-cultural environment - the authors, the works and the major trends of French literature. To articulate the singularity of works with a shared theme (examples: medieval courtesy, humanism, baroque, classicism, Enlightenment, romanticism, symbolism, surrealism). To trace the evolution of literary genres through the centuries. Finally, to have a firm command of a certain number of basic cultural references.

Course contents :
This comprehensive course of French literature is taught jointly to students of the first two years of the Bachelor's programme and extends over two years. The first part goes from the Middle Ages to the end of the 17th century, the second from the 18th century to the present day. In 2012-2013, the first part of the course will be taught.


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course is taught in the form of lectures. At times, it also takes on the form of commented significant passages submitted to the students. Students are free to intervene and ask questions at will.


Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral examination.

A list of works as recommended reading is given at the beginning of the year.
Readily accessible didactic materials are to be found in the university library's reading room: handbooks of literary history or anthologies whose teaching aims are adapted to the needs of undergraduate students. Examples: “Histoire de la littérature” (Arthaud/Poche) or “Littérature. Textes et Documents” (Nathan).
