With reference to the Learning Outcomes Reference Text of the Degree in Translation and Interpretation, students following this Course Unit develop and acquire the following LOs:
On completing this Unit students should be able to:
• Identify the producer, the target audience and the function of a German-language source text; • Identify documentary and informational needs arising from a German-language source text; • Identify reliable and suitable sources for the documentation needed to (1) understand the source text and (2) that can be exploited for language purposes in order to produce a translation (target text); • Resolve translation problems by applying the theory taught during the course; • With or without translation aids, translate from language C into language A and within the agreed timeframe a new text on a subject studied during the course using correct grammar, lexical selection, syntax, phraseology and punctuation; • Provide, if necessary, explanatory notes with their translation work; • Save their work and supply it in the form requested to the client by the agreed deadline. • Understand an oral or written presentation in language C and render it in language A, using correct grammar, style, lexical selection and spelling; • Understand, memorise and render (reproduce) in language A and oral presentation in language C, without taking notes, within the time available and in line with professional norms.

Course contents :
Through practical and adapted exercises this Course Unit introduces students to the basic principles of summarising, translating* and interpreting general texts from German into French. Students benefit from personalised progress monitoring/guidance and should expect to be given work to do at home.
*From French into German in the specific program for German-speaking students.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Group work, lectures, problem-based learning and managing small translation projects. Various exercises (practical work and exercises using the language laboratory, guided exercises/work and simulation exercises)
Assessment methods and criteria :
Continuous formative assessment. Final summative assessment - oral and written examination ? Weighting: This course is subdivided into two parts (Translation 50% and Introduction to Interpretation 50%) and has two separate exams. The global mark is an average calculated as described above (50% Translation + 50% Introduction to interpretation. In case of a fail grade, you're invited to visit the MOODLE page of the course and check the details. A 10/20 or higher mark will automatically be transferred to the second exam session. It's thus not possible to re-sit the exam related to this part of the course. ? Students resitting the exams for this course in 2017-18 will be assessed on the course material of the current year, i.e. 2017-18.
