Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, students should have acquired, through the various class exercises, skills enabling them to make good use of their knowledge and know-how in comprehension activities (listening and reading), in written expression, and, to a lesser degree, in oral expression.

Course contents :
The course includes various exercises (mostly reading, listening, and writing - and, to a more limited extent, speaking), focusing on topics relevant to the fields of history and philosophy, and on general socio-cultural topics. These exercises should enable students to understand historical, philosophical, and socio-cultural texts in an autonomous manner. The course also includes programmes of vocabulary review, pronunciation review, and grammar review (on-line self study).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The class activities are conducted in an interactive manner and thus imply active student participation. The students are also expected to follow an on-line learning programme (grammar exercises), according to the schedule included in the course notes.
The interactive classes in combination with self study will help the students progress in lexical and grammatical mastery, as well in various skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, and (to a more limited extent) oral expression.


Assessment methods and criteria :
The exam in December (40%) will consist of a grammar test, a vocabulary test, an IPA-test, listening comprehension exercises, reading comprehension exercises, and writing exercises.
In the second semester, the students will be given a written assignment (a “Press File” (group1-20%) or a paper on a book/film (group2-30%), and they have to give an oral presentation about this assignment (10%).
The exam in June (group1-30%, group2-20%) will consist of a vocabulary test, a grammar test and listening comprehension exercises.
