The course aims to develop and systematise critical reactions while facing information, starting from methods developed by historians. The aim is, on the one hand to understand to what extent a historian's discourse may be considered scientific and on the other hand to take advantage of the methods they have developed to apply them to the analysis of a current document in human sciences (especially in the field of Philosophy and Literature, as well as in Social and Political Sciences) or in everyday life.

Prerequisites :
None

Co-requisites :

Course contents :
The course studies the foundations of historical criticism, seen in the context of the emergence and development of human sciences at the end of the nineteenth century (including the post-modern reassessments). Then the course will systematically study the rules of external criticism, internal criticism and confrontation, followed by the organisation of data and the function of the historian in society. Particular attention will be given to the rules of criticism of testimony outside the traditional scope of written documents (material, iconographic, audio-visual and audio documents). Each point of theory will be illustrated by concrete examples.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Ex-cathedra lecture based on concrete cases and problem-situations, possibly accompanied by a reading file. Documents are presented and analysed or discussed during the course.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral examination (with written preparation) assessing the knowledge of the course and possible additional readings as well as the students' ability to apply the rules of critique to a document.

Recommended or required reading :
The bibliography is included in the framework-syllabus and will be commented in class. Several historical criticism manuals by different authors are available at the library.

Other information :
