DRNL1285 - Applied law exercises (with casus) : in Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Law of Obligations.

Credits : 5

Lecturers :
Mode of delivery :
Face-to-face , first and second term, 27 hours of exercises.

Language of instruction :
Dutch and French

Learning outcomes :
The tutorial sessions teach students how to solve a legal problem. The sessions therefore require students to adopt a rigorous (meticulous precision is fundamental) and critical analytical approach (the students should consider the theses put before them with a discerning mind).
In addition tutorials develop students' mastery of legal methodology: the research and use of the sources of law, the structuring of a text, the correction of quotations, and the use of bibliographical references.
They also provide an opportunity for students to discover the advantages and constraints of a collective approach. Indeed, even if the written work has to be personal and original, the students are encouraged to cooperate, especially in the research of sources and the identification of given legal issues. This applied work enables students to develop their ability to express themselves orally on a legal theme and to organise their time, through respecting the given deadlines and other constraints such as the typing and the number of pages.

Prerequisites :
None

Co-requisites :
None

Course contents :
The exercise sessions consist of writing of a piece of work on a concrete issue, and as far as possible relating to a current affairs topic.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The applied sessions are organised in different stages in order to enable the lecturers to monitor students' progress. At the beginning of the course, students are supplied with course specifications. These set out the approach to follow and provide bibliographical references.

At an intermediate stage students are required to submit a progress report (which rounds up the research that has already been done), which will enable the lecturer to provide any necessary guidance. During the year, the students may contact the lecturer to ask any relevant questions.

Finally, the applied sessions are rounded off with a session to review work done and study model answers, which enables a constructive assessment of the work done.
The applied sessions require students to respect the rules set out in the "course specifications".

Assessment methods and criteria :
At the end of the tutorial sessions, students receive a mark out of 20 points.
The evaluation criteria are: the quality of the intellectual research and of the solution proposed to the applied law exercise; the structure of the written work; the precision of the content and of the form, the bibliography and the proper use of sources, respect of the rules, the spelling and participation in class.

Recommended or required reading :
See the specifications relating to the tutorial sessions.

Other information :
The solving of the practical case implies the use of different sources: syllabus of the courses, bibliography of the specifications, research in the libraries (legislation, doctrine, jurisprudence).
