DRHO2111 - Systems for the Protection of Human Rights

The course is taught in French, but some of the texts included in the documentation file are in English.

Learning outcomes :
The course aims to introduce students to the principal mechanisms, institutions and procedures put in place on the global (the United Nations), regional and national levels to ensure the protection and the promotion of human rights guaranteed by international law. In particular, it covers the grounds for appeal available at the international level to the victims of human rights violations and the role played by NGOs within the framework of these various mechanisms. The course also evokes the historical context in which these various mechanisms developed and the interactions which connect them.

Course contents :
The course is divided into four parts:

- Part One: The protection of human rights within the universal framework: the United Nations

- Part Two: The protection of human rights within the regional framework:

O The Council of Europe (European Court of Human Rights, European Social Charter, European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, European Commission against Racism and Intolerance and Commissioner for Human Rights).
O The European Union
O The Organization of American States (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and Inter-American Court of Human Rights)
O The Organization of African Unity and the African Union (African Commission on Human and People's Rights and African Court of Human and People's Rights)

- Part Three. The relationship between international law and domestic law in the implementation of international human rights legislation

- Part Four. The protection of human rights with regard to the non-governmental entities: international organisations and multinational corporations
