The EU is a major power in the international system and an active promoter of the multilateral exchanges within the international institutions.

The EU supports political and economic multilateralism in the international relations which is based on a legal system which strives for the implementation of new regulatory targets.

Due to its size and its sphere of influence, the EU is at the heart of this new multipolar order. Therefore the focus will be on its relationships with the US, Russia, China, Japan and the emerging powers like India and Brazil.

The course gives an overview of the strategic partnerships between the EU and the US, Russia, China, Japan, India and Brazil. It pays attention to the position, the sphere of influence and the subsequent behavior of the EU and its member states within the international organizations such as the UN General Assembly and Security Council, the WTO, the IMF, UNESCO including the G8 and the G20.
