Course contents :
I - General Part
The student will have to read and study the reference book of Italian Literature History, proposed in the bibliography.

II - Course given ex cathedra :
The cours proposes to discover, to read and to analyse the works of five important writers for ancient, modern and contemporary Italian literature, belonging to different genres - such as epics, novel, poetry, theatre and short stories - in order to cover a largest range of styles and choices. It will be possible to deepen these authors and their literary works in a scientific and monographic way, through professoral lectures and the reading of a limited choice of poems/chapters/pieces specifically chosen to represent the whole production.
The corpus can change all the two years. Among the possible authors to be studied : Dante, Petrarca, Machiavelli, Ariosto, Tasso, Goldoni, Alfieri, Leopardi, Manzoni, Verga, Nievo, Foscolo, Pascoli, Pirandello, Ungaretti, Quasimodo, Montale, and some others.

III - Written paper
Furthermore, the studient will write a paper of 12-15 pages (incl. bilbiography) upon a subject or a work which he/she wants to study (title should be discussed with the teacher) with a small scientifical research. This written paper will be delivered within the 10th January.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The lectures are given ex cathedra by the professor. The texts to be read are available during the lessons or included in the syllabus. All the PPT projections are also available on esaintlouis. These PPT slides, conceived synthetically, remain a tool to the preparation of the course but we recommend following the lessons anyway.
The student will read some sections of the book available to buy in the reprography service:
Carlo Vecce, Piccola storia della letteratura italiana, Napoli : Liguori, 2009.
Furthermore, the student has to know a choice of pieces and poems taken from the following works:
• Ludovico Ariosto, Orlando Furioso
• Carlo Goldoni, La locandiera.
• Alessandro Manzoni, I promessi sposi
• Giovanni Verga, Novelle
• Giuseppe Ungaretti, Il porto sepolto
If the student wishes to read one whole book, he/she can choose a bilingual edition (recommended for Ariosto) or a translation (recommended for Manzoni). A detailed literature list will be given in September.
