Course contents :
Beyond the immediate factors of economic growth (capital, workforce) conditioning an economy's current growth rate, the fundamental factors leading to a sustained economic growth and sound economic development are still a hot subject for debate among growth economists. Institutions, geography, human capital, cultural traits, health : all those factors need to be considered, with varying relevance and importance depending on the considered period and/or country.

The objective of this seminar is to present to the students the main theories existing in the field of economic growth, and to guide them through a macroeconomic analysis of the possible factors of growth, both immediate and structural. Each group of students will have to choose a particular developing country, for which they will have to carry out a qualitative and quantitative analysis of its current economic health. The aim of this exercise is to formulate some recommandations regarding the possible measures to be implemented so as to improve the economic development of the considered country.

Non exhaustive list of the subjects that will be tackled during this macroeconomic analysis :

1. Decomposition of the immediate factors of growth : contribution of the different components of the gross domestic product (investment, evolution of the skilled/unskilled workforce), computation of the Solow residual.

2. Economic development and human capital : degree of qualification of the workforce, brain drain, inequality, education and development.

3. Economic development and institutions : economic impact of the quality of institutions (private property, corruption).

4. Economic development and human health : economic impact of some pandemics such as AIDS, malaria, etc.
