ECGE1256 - Seminar in Economics

The seminar is taught in English. Presentation and Term papers are in English as well.


Learning outcomes :
The goal of this seminar is to provide the student an opportunity to:
• Formulate an economic question related to the theme of the seminar,
• Relate the economic theory with the facts,
• Become familiarized to working with data,
• Edit a summary paper, using bibliographical sources,
• Work in team and present one's work to each other.

Course contents :
The seminar's theme will be the relation between GDP and complementary and/or alternative measures of economic welfare. Emphasis will be placed
- on GDP and its drawbacks
- on complementary indicators (using GDP) and composite indicators
- on alternative indicators (not using GDP)
- on data issues

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The instructor will explain the theoretical background of the seminar's theme in two or three introductory sessions of the seminar. Thereafter, the students divide themselves into small groups and start to study the literature/data related to the subject each group has elected. The instructor will supervise and guide, on a regular basis in meetings with each group, the progress of the summary paper that needs to be written. In the last part of the seminar, each group presents its work to the other students, followed by a discussion.


Assessment methods and criteria :
The grade will be determined by
- the term paper (50%)
- the presentation (25%)
- class participation (25%)
