2013 - 2014 Programme

Key learning outcomes

In view of the constant and rapid changes in the fields of information and communication, the three years of Bachelor studies aim to impart the essential knowledge and know-how needed for a detailed understanding of the communication processes at work.
Upon completion of the Bachelor in information and communication, students will have acquired the following skills:

  • a general culture in human and social sciences, more specifically, knowledge of the major currents of thought that shape these disciplines, as well as the history and culture of our societies, with an openness to non-Western societies;
  • theoretical (including major theoretical approaches used in information and communication sciences), methodological, intellectual and practical skills in social sciences, essential for the analysis of contents, companies as well as media and communication practices;
  • an ability to reflect on issues of information and communication;
  • ethical, personal and social skills;
  • language skills: fluency in English and Dutch, both orally and in writing, in particular, the ability to engage in a general conversation and communicate about the objects and analyses in the field of social sciences.

and more broadly, a wealth of transferable skills:

  • to meet the challenges of the communicator:
  • Coordinate communication in a dynamic and complex world
  • Structure and communicate the image and the message of a company or an association
  • Make coherent use of a wide range of communication tools
  • Develop a communication plan
  • Implement interactive communication both inside and outside the organisation
  • Practice one’s profession in a responsible and ethical manner
  • to meet the challenges of the journalist:
  • Understand the major issues of today’s society
  • Research thoroughly and exploit sources in a critical manner
  • Analyse, put into context and comment on current events  
  • Produce quality information in a competitive context
  • Practice one’s profession in a responsible and ethical manner
  • Adapt to the changing environment of the media and of their uses

In addition, for students enrolled in multilingual programmes:

  • the ability to follow a course, study it and present its ensuing oral or written assessment in the target language (Dutch and / or English)

  • and, more broadly, a knowledge of the cultural world, the specific characteristics and ways of thinking associated with the target language (Dutch and / or English)

For students enrolled in a Dutch oriented multilingual programme:

  • the ability to conduct research in the field of social sciences, and to write a substantial work of academic scope in Dutch (see: Seminarie media en politieke, sociale actualiteiten).
