Learning outcomes :
The course gives a general overview on the international activities of the European Union; it offers a sort of grammar of external activities, as organised by the Lisbon Treaty. It gives the student an analytical framework in which to place any particular problem of international action of the EU.

Course contents :
The international activity of the European Union is multidimensional. The course takes a broader approach than the one which consists in segmenting the EU policy in various parts. The course, after a description of the different instruments of the external action, tries to examine the global relationship with some important regions of the world, in fields like trade, development cooperation, external security and defense policy. The course presents the positions of the European Union regarding some important multilateral questions and analyses the problems related to the decision making process in external policy.
