This seminar is aimed at bringing the students to the apprehension, both in a reflexive and a practical way, of the mechanisms at work in producing information of the journalistic type.

The requirements of a journalistic approach with respect to the choice and processing of information, the search of sources and the deontological rules that govern this process will also be brought to light.

One of the main axes of the seminar will consist of experimenting the various techniques specific to the written press, but founding as well every audio-visual or multimedia production and a wide variety of journalistic kinds. Another key dimension will consist of a reflection on the evolution of the mediatic landscape within which journalistic information is nowadays led to extend, as well as on the constraints imposed upon by the socio-economic context.

Prerequisites :
For the Bachelor in Information and Communication :

Co-requisites :
None

Course contents :
The seminar will be dedicated to setting the stage of the mediatic diversity nowadays at work in a society broadly influenced and even impregnated by communication. This specific aspect of the evolution of media will be further developed in collective works that will be presented by the students in the final stage of the seminar.

The necessary conditions for producing information of the journalistic type will constitute the second transversal set of elements in this initiation to the specific techniques of journalistic information's production. This will be realized through analyses and practical exercises (in- and off-classroom). These elements will be exposed in class by the titular with contributions of professionals invited to share their analysis of media and their daily practice.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Teaching is through in-class lectures, which are given by the course lecturer, and is supported by presentations by a number of media professionals, who are invited to present their insights and analysis and to discuss their daily work.

The last meetings of the seminar (end of November and early December) will be devoted to presentations by the students of the files elaborated collectively.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The grading will be based on:
- 1°) the presence and active participation in class meetings; the “test about actuality” (see below: Other informations); the writing exercises to be carried out during class meetings or prepared between classes [10 points]

- 2°) as for the collective work: selection of the angle of view among the suggested themes; search of sources; contacts with field actors; documentation: a file between 15,000 and 20,000 characters, spaces included; presentation in class [10 points].
