Learning outcomes :
At the end of this course, the history student will be familiar with textbooks used to approach Medieval texts. He should be able to translate and to understand a historical text in Old French, in Middle French or in Classical French. He should be able to appraise the faithfulness and the quality of the translations available.

Course contents :
The course includes a historical introduction to the French language (origins, evolution), a presentation of the main elements of the Medieval French grammar and the analysis of many texts, chronicles, literary and diplomatic texts.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lecture
The texts chosen are mainly chronicles, literary and diplomatic texts. Some texts are studied using a reproduction of a manuscript.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Summative assessment: Oral examination
Formative assessment: students are expected to prepare the translation of texts before the class and they should translate themselves in class ; immediate correction.

A detailed and annotated bibliography is supplied to students at the beginning of the course.
