Language of instruction :
The course is given in French, however the studied subjects imply open-mindedness to classical languages and to the main languages of contemporary research.


Learning outcomes :
Introduction to political and institutional history of the late-republican and imperial Roman state. Introduction to aspects of the economy, religion and culture of the ancient world. Beyond the purely cognitive aspect, which however remains fundamental, the course aims to awaken the student to the diversity of exploitable documentation, to the variety of situations and evolutions, and to the complexity of the issues.

Course contents :
Through general lectures and case studies involving written as well as iconographic and archaeological sources, presentation: 1° of the political and institutional structure of the Roman world, from the end of the Republic to the end of the Empire; 2° of certain remarkable features of the Ancient world in the fields of economy, religion and culture. The choice of issues addressed and documents analysed depends on the latest research and discoveries.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lecture with illustrations. The students may ask questions during the lecture.


Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral examination with preparation time.
