Language of instruction :
The course is given in French, however the studied subjects imply open-mindedness to classical languages and to the main languages of contemporary research.


Learning outcomes :
Introduction to the political and institutional history of Greek States and the Roman republican State, as well as of the neighbouring States or communities. Beyond the purely cognitive aspect, which however remains fundamental, the course aims to awaken the student to the diversity of exploitable documentation, to the variety of situations and evolutions, and to the complexity of the issues.

Course contents :
Within a chronological time frame covering the period until the predominance of Rome in the Mediterranean (mid-second century BC) the subject matter is divided into two parts. The first one is devoted to the Greek world: the end of the Mycenaean world and the dark ages - the genesis of the City - colonisation - social organisation, archaic and classical institutions - the transformations of the Hellenistic period; the second part is devoted to Italy and the Roman world: political and territorial organisation of pre-roman Italy - Etruscans - society and institutions of royal and republican Rome, and the organisation of the conquered territories in Italy and the Mediterranean. According to the research topic, sites, regions, epigraphic or archaeological documents are particularly sought to enlighten notions or question them.


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lecture with illustrations. The students may ask questions during the lecture.

Oral examination with preparation time.
