Course contents :
Based on a consideration of the validity and issues of a “historiography” of literature, this course focuses - in a Western and more specifically European perspective - on a detailed overview of the major ideological, aesthetic and literary currents that determined Dutch language literature and its prominent figures and canonical texts.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Ex cathedra lecture is completed by readings, commented and discussed in class.
The course also includes the writing of an essay to familiarise student with the applicable criteria of scientific writing. The student is entitled to submit a first draft to the professor. The draft will then be reworked on the basis of the professor's remarks.
The literature courses are biennial and include students from BAC I and II. The two consecutive years are therefore complementary.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Formative assessment:
The students will continuously be assessed in class, during the discussions and the essays.

Summative assessment:
Oral examination at the end of the year. The expectations are higher for the students in second year than for those in first year.
