Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, the student will be able to analyse the different relations that constitute the public space, between the fields of knowledge, media and politics.
The course will deal with theoretical resources which are useful for conducting such an analysis, and then will propose some examples for concrete application to contemporary social, economical and cultural phenomenon. Prerequisites :

Course contents :
This academic year, the course will begin with an introduction concerning the notion of « Public Sphere », and will subsequently deal with four major themes :
1) Relation between media and politics : theoretical resources and application to the “Francorchamps Affair” 2) The society of (non-)knowledge : theoretical resources and application to the normative and performative language of institutions 3) The analysis of a cultural object : the example of self-help books success 4) The responsibility of intellectuals in the public sphere : theoretical resources and application to the university-society links issue. Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
- Ex cathedra presentations, accompanied by readings of texts, discussed and analysed in class.
- Highlighting of concepts through the analysis of audiovisual media documents, or speech of scholars. - Active student participation is expected. Assessment methods and criteria :
The examination will take place orally and will last approximately 15 minutes, with time allotted for students to prepare the questions they have drawn at random. The students may have their notes. The questions are intended to assess a student's acquisition, or thorough understanding, of the subject material rather than simply test a student's knowledge. They will give students the opportunity to establish links between various parts of the course and to demonstrate their capacity to reflect on contemporary issues while using theoretical resources.
Students will have the opportunity (not compulsory) to prepare a presentation that will count for the half of the examination Recommended or required reading :
