Learning outcomes :
The objective of the English team in Bloc 2 is to make you progress from a lower intermediate (B1) level of English to an intermediate level (B2).
Interactive classes in combination with home preparations will help you to progress in lexical and grammatical mastery as well as in the various skills: speaking (top-priority), understanding spoken and written English (press file) as well as writing.

- Presentation and debates well-documented on current news topics and on socio-professional aspects ; press articles, news from the web, TV news.

- Basic Grammar révision (self-study) and Advanced Grammar : connectives, advanced tenses, reported speech, modals and semi-auxiliaries
-Working on the following topics :

- Company presentations
- Jobs and job interviews
- Meetings
- The sovereign Debt Crisis in the Eurozone

POLS :
-The American elections.
-Cross-cultural differences: China vs. the West.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Important: this course is based on continuous assessment, both oral and written. Your active participation and involvement are of the utmost importance. There is no exam in June. The final grade is determined by the oral, written tests as well as permanent evaluation throughout the year.

- Oral expression: 12 points
It is based on permanent evaluation throughout the year and two tests in December and in April.
Students should be as active as possible during the interactive classes. Participation, knowledge of the vocabulary, mastering oral exercises, etc., will be evaluated all year long.

- Written expression: 8 points
Basic Grammar (self-study) and Advanced Grammar, listening comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills.
It is based on regular tests and two exams, one in December, the other one in April.

- Q1 and Q2:
Q1 : The exams in December (written + oral) account for 35% of the points (mark for Q.1). A mark, equivalent or superior to 10/20 exempts students from this subject matter for the year. The result will be noted in the January report.

Q2 : The exams in April (written + oral), as well as continuous evaluation all year long (participation, assignments, press file, debates,…) are part of the grade for Q2. This mark accounts for 65% of the points.
10/20 is the pass mark that will exempt you from this subject matter for the year.

Other information :
Attendance is compulsory! You may not have been absent more than three times during the whole year unless you have a medical certificate.
For students who were absent 3 times or more in all without medical certificate the grade for active participation and involvement will be affected. If you have been absent the day of an oral or written test, you must have a medical certificate; otherwise you score 0 for that test (0A).
