ANGL1191 - English I

Credits : 3

Lecturers :
Mode of delivery :
Face-to-face , first and second term, 30 hours of theory.

Language of instruction :
The course is essentially taught in English.

Learning outcomes :
The course proposes several activities of comprehension and expression aiming to elevate the students from a basic standard level to a higher level of English (B1). Roughly, this means that by the end of the course, the students should be able to communicate orally and in writing, using simple but clear sentences so that the content of the message, taken as a whole, is understandable.

A. The course (1 hour per week) is essentially devoted to oral and written expression (interactive sessions) based on everyday life situations (useful English - socialising, telephoning, understanding and saying numbers) and on the news (a press file to be presented orally). We will also focus on reading techniques that enable to understand the structure of a text.

B. The tutorials (1 hour per week) are strongly recommended for any student facing difficulties in fundamental English grammar.

The grammar to review includes the following subjects:

- Verbs: conjugations, principal parts and tenses;
- Modals;
- The passive voice;
- Adjectives;
- Quantifiers;
- Interrogative sentences;
- Question-tags;
- Short answers.

Concretely: At the beginning of the year, the professor suggests a self-assessment test of the students' grammatical knowledge.

If the result is unsatisfactory (less than 6/10), the professor will recommend the student to attend the weekly tutorials, in which basic grammar will be reviewed and will be the subject of multiple oral and written exercises as well as summary tests.

In addition, computer-based self-assessment grammatical exercises (online) will strongly be recommended.

Prerequisites :
None

Co-requisites :
None

Course contents :
- Topics useful in everyday life (first term):
* Socialising (introducing yourself, pronunciation);
* Social media (figures and numbers, telephoning, email writing)

- News (second term):
* Press file consisting of 3 articles, which also need to be presented orally. Introduction to reading techniques and study of linking words (connectives)
* News panel
- Socio-economic topics (second term):
* Jobs

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The pedagogical method used in class will generally be:

- Beginning of the course: checking whether or not the oral and written exercises have been prepared;
- Oral expression: imposed exercises, then more spontaneous exercises;
- Optional written exercises, mainly the writing of clear sentences using the most frequently used words (key words relating to the subject). Progressive introduction to linking words (connectives).

Assessment methods and criteria :
- Oral part: 50%

The assessment is based on continuous evaluation during the classes (25%) and on a summary test in May (25%) about all the oral exercises studied in class as well as those that had to be prepared at home (home and exam assignments, the Press File).

It is very important for the students to be as active as possible in class. Their involvement and participation, their knowledge of vocabulary, their mastery of oral exercises etc., will indeed be assessed throughout the whole year.

- Written part: 50%

This part is based on a test in November, a test in March, and two summary tests organised in December and May.
The written tests in November and December make up 25% of the total grade (grade of Q1). A grade equal to or higher than 10/20 results in an exemption for this part of the course.

The written tests in March and November also make up 25% of the total grade.
These written examinations cover grammatical questions (60%) as well as the listening comprehension exercises and the vocabulary studied in class (40% points).
Beyond these three absences, each new absence has to be justified by a medical certificate or a solid and well-substantiated written apology. All unjustified absences will be penalized in the continuous evaluation grade.
