Learning outcomes :
At the end of the course, student will have :
- acquired basic knowledge to analyse the European Union as a political system
- acquired the bases of a critical approach of the past and pending developments of the European project.

Good general knowledge of the institutional framework of the European Union

Course contents :
INTRODUCTION - WHAT IS THE EUROPEAN UNION?

• Basic elements: treaties, institutions, identity, values.
• European integration: different stages, changing membership; Europeanisation and its limits.
• The future: rejection of the Constitutional Treaty: what next?; the challenge of euroscepticism and nationalism; globalisation and individualism; rethinking the European Union.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
After a general introduction, the various chapters of the reference book as well as complementary articles are presented by the students (groups of 3 at the most). These presentations are supplemented by written summaries. The speakers are invited to identify, for each topic, some questions likely to incite discussion with the audience.

The students receive a description of the indicative contents of the course as well as a bibliography including certain books that are more particularly recommended to read.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The final grade is based partly (50%) on the evaluation of the presentation made within the framework of the course (as well as its written support) and (50%) on the written examination (two questions).
