2012 - 2013 Programme

Profile

Sociology and anthropology originate from modern societies’ wish to know more about themselves, to know more about “other” societies and to have the ability to influence their own behaviour. In a world in turmoil, the sociologist’s and the anthropologist’s knowledge and skills are more relevant now than ever before.

Sociology and anthropology are two fields that are less defined by an object than by an approach, a view, a manner of analysing social reality or societal life. The sociologist’s and anthropologist’s approach combines an analytical capacity and the taking into consideration of concrete realities (through various survey techniques, field studies, etc.). This approach is intended to be both rigorous and innovative.

The scope of study of these two fields is quite vast (social change, power, inequalities, globalisation, multiculturalism, cities and urban mobility, beliefs, the family, sexuality, gender relations, the new media, social networks, the ecological issues, health and well-being, etc.). From fundamental research to assistance in the decision-making process (consulting) and at the service of society, these two fields address a wide range of societal issues.
